Why Occupational Therapy for Hoarding?Making the invisible visible - through function, meaning, and dignity.
Hoarding is not just about “too much stuff.” It’s about trauma, safety, identity, loss, and the complex relationship we have with our space, our possessions, and ourselves.
Occupational Therapy (OT) is uniquely placed to support people living with hoarding disorder and chronic disorganisation — because it sees the whole person, not just the problem.
Why OT Matters in Hoarding Support
✅ We assess function, not just appearance
A space may look unsafe — but what’s happening in daily life? Is the person cooking, washing, moving safely?
✅ We understand executive function and sensory processing
Many clients experience neurodivergence, ADHD traits, trauma responses, or cognitive changes that affect decision-making and organising.
✅ We’re trained in trauma-informed, consent-based care
We never force change. We build readiness. We move at the client’s pace.
✅ We focus on meaningful goals
Clearing a path isn’t enough. What does the client want to be able to do again — have family visit? Use their bed? Feel safe?
✅ We work across systems
We collaborate with housing, mental health, social care, and families — bridging gaps and reducing harm.
Our Clinical Framework
At Enabling Spaces CIC, all our work is grounded in clinical OT models, relational theory, and lived experience. We’ve also developed our own specialist tools — including reflective frameworks, triage models, and assessment tools — to make sure our support is ethical, evidence-based, and trauma-informed.
